NairoGreen Youth Movement - Sikiliza Sauti Zetu Dunia Inaita
The NairoGreen Youth Movement Declaration
Through the SSY project, OAY is bringing young people together to raise awareness and promote sustainable practices in Nairobi. The NairoGreen Campaign is a collective effort led by youth and women’s groups, university clubs, and the Kenya Youth Climate Advisory under the #NairoGreen Youth Movement (SSY Climate Action Ambassadors).
The Sikiliza Sauti Yetu microsite is a hub for impact—tracking progress, celebrating wins, and amplifying unheard voices. It shares policy updates, advocacy successes, and community-driven environmental achievements.
This campaign was shaped by young people through surveys, discussions, and policy reviews. Over 500 climate activists, 65 youth-led organisations, 6 university clubs, 18 youth workers, and 47 policymakers contributed to identifying key challenges and solutions.
Key Challenges
- 1. Lack of Support: Youth-led environmental initiatives struggle with funding, technical support, and restrictive eligibility requirements.
- 2. Limited Youth Participation: Young people have little say in climate policies and programs at national and county levels.
- 3. Poor Waste Management: Few legal garbage collection points exist, and enforcement is inconsistent.
- 4. Weak Collaboration: There are few structured platforms for youth, women-led groups, and institutions to work together on climate action.
- 5. Low Awareness on EPR: While Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Regulations require companies to manage product waste, youth partnerships and public awareness remain low.
Our Solution: The NairoGreen Youth Movement
We are mobilizing young people and communities to push for sustainable environmental practices in urban areas. Our goal is to reach at least 3,000 beneficiaries through awareness campaigns, youth-led clean-ups, and advocacy.
Young ambassadors, CSOs, and CBOs will lead community engagements to identify and address local environmental challenges. Forums and mobilization events will bring together policymakers, organizations, and the public to drive change—especially in urban waste management.
This platform will map legal and illegal dumpsites, track waste pollution along Nairobi River, and allow communities to share real-time data and stories that drive action. It’s more than just collecting information: It’s about using data to hold leaders accountable, improve waste policies, and push for better urban planning.
When waste piles up, it’s not just an environmental issue—it affects health, the economy, and society. That’s why this campaign goes beyond clean-ups. It empowers communities, demands action from policymakers, and pushes industries to take responsibility.
The NairoGreen Campaign is a force for change, transforming Nairobi one clean-up, one policy shift, and one empowered community at a time.
We, the Kenyan Youth, encourage every citizen and organization to Sikiliza Sauti Zetu Dunia Inaita (Hear our Voices) by taking actions that promote urban sustainability. See the Take Action page to find out how you and your organization may participate.
